Our History

Founded in 1986, White Mountain Appraisals, Inc. has completed more than 22,000 residential, commercial, industrial, land, and complex appraisals across northern New Hampshire and Vermont. Our work is trusted by lenders, attorneys, municipalities, and private clients who require accuracy, defensibility, and deep regional insight.

We do it all - We are VA, FHA, USDA approved.  We do appraisals for banks and lending on residential and commercial properties.  We do appraisals for all purposes:  Loans, estates and probate, pre-buy valuations, tax appeals, expert witness, divorce, purchases, pre-listing appraisals and most everything to do with valuing real estate. 


Our Team

James C. Walker — President & Principal Appraiser

James is a Certified General Appraiser in NH & VT and a Registered Professional Engineer, with over four decades of experience in valuation, engineering, and construction innovation. He holds an MBA, MS in Architectural Engineering, and BS in Civil Engineering (Cum Laude), and has taught real estate appraisal and investment at UNH and Lyndon State College.

His appraisal work spans hotels, resorts, hydroelectric facilities, commercial and industrial properties, land developments, and large tract parcels. He has been accepted as an expert witness in state and federal courts in both NH and VT.


James is also an inventor with 12 U.S. patents in building systems, and serves as President of Innovative Structural Building Products. He’s a civic leader in Franconia, NH, and an instrument-rated private pilot.




John W. Foss — Appraiser Trainee

John brings over a decade of federal project management, financial analysis, and performance auditing experience to his appraisal career. He has led multi-million-dollar contracts for the Department of Homeland Security and served as a Performance Auditor with GSA’s Office of Inspector General.

John holds an MBA from Middlebury Institute and dual bachelor’s degrees from UNH. He is fluent in Spanish and skilled in regression analysis, GIS, and Excel modeling.

His appraisal focus includes residential homes, condominiums and multi-family properties, and rural and resort-area land parcels.
